The Mill Building

Brooklyn, New York

The Mill Building is a multifamily renovation in the heart of Williamsburg Brooklyn. Formerly a 19th century denim mill, the building has robust industrial character with the original factory floors, forked heavy timber columns, and common brick facade. The project scope included renovation of the lobby and six floors of corridors. After demolition exposed the concealed & preserved bones of the building, the design concept shifted to more of a reductive exercise than an additive one. Masonry was sandblasted, windows rebuilt, furred out walls were demolished, columns stripped, ceilings removed, and fixtures were replaced- with only the bare minimum new material being introduced. The renovation strived to create an environment that strikes a balance between industrial and warm, refined and articulated, historic and timeless.
