Chilmark, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Chilmark Mass Timber is a guest house on Martha’s Vineyard. The form is a modern interpretation of the saltbox archetype prevalent in the region, veiled in charred cedar that blends the house into the tree shadows. With decks that exceed the indoor area and a 24' tall roof peak, the guest house feels far larger than its 900sf footprint—the maximum allowed by zoning code.
The home is constructed from prefabricated mass timber components manufactured nearby in Maine and shipped to the site, reducing the project’s environmental impact, construction schedule, and overall cost. As a construction technology, mass timber replaces more carbon-intensive materials such as steel with lighter, long-span, fire-resistant engineered wood components that bring warmth and natural texture to the interior. These prefab SIPS (structurally insulated panel system) arrive to site flat-packed and erected in-situ, while the bathrooms are shipped as completed modules, allowing the entire structure to be assembled on site in just 7 days.
